OBP Certification
Standard Overview
OBP Certification is a program that verifies the origin and traceability of ocean bound plastic (OBP), which is plastic waste at risk of entering the ocean.
It ensures OBP is collected and managed responsibly, ethically, and efficiently, with a focus on both commercially recyclable and non-commercially recyclable OBP waste.
Standard Owner
Zero Plastic Oceans (ZPO) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2019 that focuses on preventing plastic waste from entering marine environments.

The OBP Neutrality Certification Subprogram enables the organizations in charge of collecting and treating non-commercially recyclable OBP to issue and sell third-party verified plastic credits (called OBP Credits).
It also allows the organizations buying these credits to have their neutrality claims certified. It targets non-commercially recyclable OBP.
OBP Recycling Certification Subprogram

The OBP Recycling Certification Subprogram focuses on the origin of the OBP waste from the first collection point and guarantees the traceability of recycled OBP waste until a new product is created.
This certification targets commercially recyclable OBP plastic waste

Zero Plastic Oceans defined OBP using existing literature and common sense combined with ground experience.
After determining the first draft, we shared it with experts of the field and selected a final definition of OBP. This process led us to classify OBP in three categories:
- Potential OBP;
- Waterways OBP;
- Shoreline OBP.
After one year of existence and consultations with organizations collecting waste from the fishing industry, we decided to add another category “Fishing materials.”
This highly depends on your project’s complexity and how prepared your organization is.
In any case, the whole process (from the first contact with a certification body, to the reception of your certification) will take a minimum of three months.
On average, three to six months is the time projects need to get their scope certificate.
The cost depends on the scope and services proposed.
The certification is awarded for one year.
Every year all projects need to undergo a renewal audit.
