Ocean Bound Plastic

Certification Program

Established in 2019, Zero Plastic Oceans is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to addressing the issue of plastic pollution. The organization was founded upon the realization that a significant portion of plastic waste in the oceans originates from discarded plastic, known as "Ocean Bound Plastic" (OBP). Historically, most organizations have concentrated their efforts on collecting OBP that can be resold for recycling, overlooking the bulk of abandoned plastic waste.

The questions that came up were: How can plastic collectors be empowered to gather all types of plastic waste? How can a tool be developed that enables the tracking of abandoned plastic waste in its natural environment and ensures its proper management? How can a network of professionals be established to work collaboratively in achieving a plastic-free ocean?

In response to these challenges, Zero Plastic Oceans introduced the OBP Certification Program. These tools are designed to certify the correct collection and management of plastic waste, offering a comprehensive and transparent view of the fate of this waste.

The OBP Certifications Program Has Divided into Four Categories

Waterways OBP
Shoreline OBP
Potential OBP
