Hey there, Qualizer! It's time to talk about Greenhouse gasses (GHGs). In our daily activities, we can't escape the need for energy resources, which eventually release emissions commonly known as GHGs.
Actually, these gasses can be beneficial to us when they're within reasonable limits. One of their benefits is providing warmth, making the Earth's climate comfortable for human habitation.
However, it becomes dangerous when GHGs exceed their limits. There are several consequences, such as climate instability, rising sea levels, and a global temperature increase. If you pay attention, you'll notice that we're already experiencing some of these signs.
One of the things humans can do is GHG Verification and Validation. In short, this is a specialized process that helps measure pollution from specific gasses like carbon dioxide, which can contribute to global warming.
This step is crucial, especially for large companies or organizations, to track and record the amount of harmful gasses released into the atmosphere. It's not just about measurement; it also identifies responsibility and outlines actions to reduce GHG presence in the atmosphere.
Firstly, verification and validation can serve as a tool to determine who is genuinely making efforts to reduce pollution and who is merely talking about it. Additionally, by measuring and assessing this pollution, future plans can be
devised to reduce and prevent adverse effects on the climate and environment.
Last but not least, verification and validation provide comprehensive information that can help companies and countries make better and more environmentally friendly decisions.
To carry out this essential process, an independent and accredited body is needed. We can't just experiment when it comes to climate change mitigation and environmental impact management.
Accreditation and Qualification
In Indonesia, accreditation for such bodies is done by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN). If a body is accredited by KAN, it means they are automatically recognized regionally and internationally for the accredited schemes they offer. As an example, PT Qualitas Sertifikasi Indonesia is currently undergoing accreditation as a GHG Verification and Validation body by KAN.
Expert Team Qualifications
These bodies must have a trained and qualified team of experts in various related fields. In the context of GHGs, this means having experts in environmental science, chemistry, engineering, and more, with in-depth understanding relevant to the sectors being verified or validated for GHG measurement and analysis.
Methodology and Guidelines
Clear methodologies and guidelines are essential for measuring, calculating, and reporting GHG emissions and absorptions. This includes guidance on data collection, laboratory testing, and statistical calculations. The LV/VGRK accreditation scheme from KAN follows specific standards like SNI/ISO/IEC 17029:2019, ISO/IEC 14065:2020, ISO 14064-3:2019, ISO 14066:2011, and IAF MD 6:2014.
Transparency and Accountability
Transparency and accountability are crucial during the verification and validation process. These bodies must publish information about the methods used, the procedures followed, and the results of verification and validation. The aim is to enable others to understand and evaluate the process.
Independence
As organizations with significant responsibilities, independence is paramount. These organizations must ensure they have no conflicts of interest with the entities they are verifying or validating to guarantee objectivity and the reliability of results.
It's important to remember, that GHG Verification and Validation organizations play a significant role in supporting global efforts to combat climate change and manage environmental impacts transparently, accurately, and responsibly. GHG verification and validation is like a check-up, making sure we know how much harmful gas is currently present and helping keep the Earth fresh, healthy, and comfortable for all of us!
